Biomimetics inspired surfaces for drag reduction and oleophobicity/philicity

Beilstein Journal of Nanotechnology , 2011, DOI: 10.3762/bjnano.2.9
Abstract: The emerging field of biomimetics allows one to mimic biology or nature to develop nanomaterials, nanodevices, and processes which provide desirable properties. Hierarchical structures with dimensions of features ranging from the macroscale to the nanoscale are extremely common in nature and possess properties of interest. There are a large number of objects including bacteria, plants, land and aquatic animals, and seashells with properties of commercial interest. Certain plant leaves, such as lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) leaves, are known to be superhydrophobic and self-cleaning due to the hierarchical surface roughness and presence of a wax layer. In addition to a self-cleaning effect, these surfaces with a high contact angle and low contact angle hysteresis also exhibit low adhesion and drag reduction for fluid flow. An aquatic animal, such as a shark, is another model from nature for the reduction of drag in fluid flow. The artificial surfaces inspired from the shark skin and lotus leaf have been created, and in this article the influence of structure on drag reduction efficiency is reviewed. Biomimetic-inspired oleophobic surfaces can be used to prevent contamination of the underwater parts of ships by biological and organic contaminants, including oil. The article also reviews the wetting behavior of oil droplets on various superoleophobic surfaces created in the lab.
SYNTHESIS AND ANTICONVULSANT ACTIVITY OF N4-(4-METHYL PHTHALIMIDO) SUBSTITUTED PHENYL (THIO) SEMICARBAZIDE DERIVATIVES

International Journal of Pharmaceutical Research and Development , 2011,
Abstract: The phenyl (thio) semicarbazide derivatives of phthalimido pharmacophores were synthesized and evaluated for their anticonvulsant activity. A series of N4-(4-Methyl Phthalimido) Substituted Phenyl (Thio) Semicarbazide were synthesized by reaction of substituted phenyl (thio) semicarbazide with 4- methyl phthalic anhydride. All the synthesized compounds were characterized on the basis of their IR, 1HNMR and elemental analysis. The anticonvulsant activity of the titled compounds revealed that four compounds 6b (R=2-OCH3), 6d(R=4-CH3), 6e(R=4-OCH3), 6g (R=4-Cl) exhibited highly significant and comparable anticonvulsant activity with respect to standard drug Phenytoin.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) vs Central Nervous System (CNS) Tuberculoma in Children—Dilemma over Clinico-Radiological Diagnosis?  [PDF]
Bharat-Bhushan Sharma, Shashi Sharma
Open Journal of Pediatrics (OJPed) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ojped.2016.63034
Abstract: Background: Neurocysticercosis (NCC) and central nervous system (CNS) tuberculomas often overlap in clinical presentation and imaging. Though the aetio-pathology entirely differs in both the scenarios but there is great confusion in their clinico-radiological evaluation as the findings and appearances are similar in many ways. The stress should be laid out over the salient features of each entity in the background of their presentation. The study was conducted to highlight the differentiation of the clinico-radiological findings in both the entities. Material and Methods: Ten patients between 5 - 15 years (mean age 10.4 years) with complaints of headache and with or without seizures had undergone MRI alone or with CT examinations. Basic sequences of T1W, T2W, T2W FLAIR and T1W contrast studies were carried out in all the cases. CT was carried out in only three cases and contrast was given in two cases. Results: Eight patients were having ring enhancing lesions in post contrast studies in MRI and two had only cystic lesions ranging from 1 - 3 cm in diameter. Conclusion: Seven cases having tuberculomas were confirmed by both the modalities with one case inconclusive. Two cases were diagnosed as neurocysticercosis as per the results. The reasonable achievable target was the goal to differentiate between NCC and tuberculomas in the brain and it was achieved. Contrast MRI and spectroscopy brought out many findings for the distinct features in many cases.
Effect of spherical Au nanoparticles on nanofriction and wear reduction in dry and liquid environments
Dave Maharaj,Bharat Bhushan
Beilstein Journal of Nanotechnology , 2012, DOI: 10.3762/bjnano.3.85
Abstract: Nano-object additives are used in tribological applications as well as in various applications in liquids requiring controlled manipulation and targeting. On the macroscale, nanoparticles in solids and liquids have been shown to reduce friction and wear. On the nanoscale, atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies have been performed in single- and multiple-nanoparticle contact, in dry environments, to characterize friction forces and wear. However, limited studies in submerged liquid environments have been performed and further studies are needed. In this paper, spherical Au nanoparticles were studied for their effect on friction and wear under dry conditions and submerged in water. In single-nanoparticle contact, individual nanoparticles, deposited on silicon, were manipulated with a sharp tip and the friction force was determined. Multiple-nanoparticle contact sliding experiments were performed on nanoparticle-coated silicon with a glass sphere. Wear tests were performed on the nanoscale with AFM as well as on the macroscale by using a ball-on-flat tribometer to relate friction and wear reduction on the nanoscale and macroscale. Results indicate that the addition of Au nanoparticles reduces friction and wear.
Analysis of Prominent Reactive Routing Protocols using Self Created Network Scenario
Amandeep Makkar,Bharat Bhushan
International Journal of Engineering Innovations and Research , 2012,
Abstract: Mobile Adhoc Network is characterized by multi-hop wireless connectivity and dynamic topology. The mobile nodes in this network communicate with each other without established infrastructure. Since the wireless links are highly error prone and can go down frequently due to mobility of nodes, therefore, routing in MANET is a critical task due to highly dynamic environment. In this research paper, pattern analysis of two on-demand routing protocols has been done by presenting their functionality. A simulation model with TCP and UDP connections has been developed to study inter-layer interactions and their performance implications. The performance differential parameters have been analyzed using metrics like PDR with varying speed and pause time. Based on the simulation results, recommendations have been made about the significance of either protocol in various situations. The study reveals that DSR protocol outperforms AODV protocol under low as well as high mobility situation in case of UDP as well as TCP connections. AODV protocol also starts performing well under high mobility situation. DSR protocol outperforms AODV protocol when the connections are through UDP and this analysis is independent of pause time. AODV protocol outperforms the DSR protocol when the connections are through TCP and the pause time is increased up to a large extent.

Abstract: Ever rising competition and changing demands of customer it is difficult to satisfy the people with different backgrounds. E- business with its various advantages of low cost, high efficiency, time saving has assumed importance these days. But it is confronted with many problems such as how to optimize the structure of website and the way of service according to the user access behavior. This paper presents an architectural framework for personalized e-business service recommendation using data mining techniques
